Due to this, Wukong in Japanese can be said as "Gokuu" via the on'yomi reading. Another possible origin of the name, is that it is derived from Wu, as in Wuju, where he was taught by Master Yi, and Kong as the characteristic name for powerful primates, such as, King Kong and Donkey Kong. Wukong's character concept is inspired by and directly based on Sun Wukong, the protagonist of the Chinese novel Journey to the West.
Both characters have the title of "The Monkey King," use the same type of weapon a staff that can change size , and ride on a type of cloud. Wukong is one of the few champions to be specifically based on a character from real-world literature. Another reference is that Wukong also likes peaches. The fact that Wukong was trained under Master Yi is also another possible reference to Sun Wukong's original master often referred to as Master Bohdi, or Wukong's more famous master during his pilgrimage to the West, Xuanzang Sanzang Genjou Sanzou in Japanese.
In the Chinese servers, Wukong is directly referred to as Sun Wukong himself in the flesh as opposed to being a different character loosely based off of him. Wukong's passive, Stone Skin, is possibly a reference to Sun Wukong being born from a stone and also said to be born from the earth itself.
This is supported by the fact that Wukong turns to stone when he dies. Nimbus strike and Decoy all references to Sun Wukong's abilities. Sun wukong rides on clouds via his "Somersault Cloud" technique and he creates clones of himself using strands of his hair.
His Crushing blow is obvioulsy also an reference to the story because he uses the same kind of staff as Sun Wukong. The internal name, the name that is used by the game developers themselves, for Wukong's ultimate Cyclone is "MonkeyKingSpinToWin", a reference to the popular community description for Garen's Judgment. During the animation of Wukong's joke, he elongates his staff very much.
Wukong himself even gloats that he can attack the enemy base from such a position though due to obvious gameplay reasons, this actual feat cannot be done in such a way. Said staff was known for weighing 13, jin, which was around 8, kg or 17, lbs. Being a monkey, Sun Wukong has a very distinct appearance that sets him apart from the other gods. Prior to his enlightenment, Wukong is usually depicted as a naked macaque. After devoting himself to the Buddhist monk Tang Sanzang, Wukong is generally shown in full warrior gear with special items such as a golden chainmail shirt, a phoenix feathered cap, cloud-walking boots, and an eight ton staff that can shrink to the size of a needle.
Sun Wukong does not have any blood relatives, as he was born from a magical rock. The book follows the story of a humble Buddhist monk named Tang Sanzang who travels from his home in Southern China to India in order to bring back holy texts and enlighten his countrymen.
After being released from the mountain he was trapped under for years, Wukong serves as the monk's bodyguard throughout his journey. In ancient times, a magical rock rested on top of Mount Huagou. One day, a stiff breeze blew upon the rock and caused a fully formed monkey to burst forth from its stone face. Despite having just been born, the young monkey was already able to walk and speak. When the Jade Emperor looked for the source of the strange light, all he could see was a baby monkey.
Thinking that the light could not possibly emanate from such a source, the Jade Emperor dismissed the incident from his mind.
As he began exploring the forest, Sun Wukong discovered other monkeys and decided to live with them. Sun Wukong immediately leapt through the waterfall and traveled up the stream to find its source.
His mission was successful, and he quickly returned and declared himself king. With the support of the forest monkeys, Sun Wukong quickly established himself as a powerful forest demon that would go on to battle the Dragon King and other sea demons. His exploits earned him a number of powerful weapons, including his signature gold chainmail shirt, phoenix cap, cloud-walking boots, and magical eight ton staff.
He tricked Yan Wang into allowing him to return to earth without undergoing reincarnation. Troubled that the balance of life was being upset by a mere monkey, Yan Wang appealed to the Jade Emperor for assistance. In addition to his supernatural powers and his martial skills, Monkey is rebellious, independent, penetrating in mind and vision, wily, confident to the point of arrogance, fearless, obstinate, energetic, quick-tempered, and quick to be offended. He is also whimsical, childlike, optimistic, creative, resourceful, spiritually detached, tolerant of the weaknesses of others, loyal, persistent, and totally loveable to the reader, if not always to Tripitaka.
With a hatred of evil and a scorn for authority, Monkey is the original superhero. Truly concerned about human morality, he always finds himself on the side of good and the weak. Tripitaka and Monkey are two parts of a whole, incapable of reaching their goal without the unity of the two selves. Note: Though Guanyin told Monkey always to identify themselves and their mission, in their first encounters Monkey fails to do so, resulting in conflict with those she has appointed to help them on the journey.
