Dodger Blue. Up next. Published on August 30, Author Matthew Moreno. View this post on Instagram. The year-old will close his successful year playing career with two All-Star appearances and a Gold Glove to his name.
Injuries have been the focal point of the last two seasons for Ethier, as he's played in a combined 38 games in that time. During the campaign he played in 22 games, over which he slashed. Ethier hit a pinch-hit home run in Thursday's win over the Phillies.
His second home run of the season was a big one, as it tied the game in the seventh inning as the Dodgers were facing a four-game series sweep. Ethier has played primarily off the bench since his activation from the DL on Sept.
Ethier started in left field and went 2-for-2 before being lifted for a pinch hitter in Sunday's loss to the Rockies. Ethier homered off the bench Saturday and was rewarded with his third start since returning from the day DL on Sept.
The year-old is one of many left-field options manager Dave Roberts has at his disposal, and given his lengthy injury history, he's unlikely to be pressed into a regular role. Ethier is dealing with a stiff neck, so the Dodgers will ease him back into the lineup. Los Angeles has a doubleheader against the Padres on Saturday, so look for Ethier to ride the bench for whichever game he doesn't start. Ethier back was reinstated from the day DL on Friday.
Ethier is also dealing with a "neck thing" according to manager Dave Roberts, but will rejoin the active roster ahead of the series against San Diego this weekend anyway. He's been able to make 10 rehab appearances over the last month while recovering from a back injury, and should be able to play in the near future once he's able and ready.
This issue explains why Ethier hasn't played in the past few days. He's still on track to rejoin the Dodgers once rosters expand after making 10 rehab appearances across three minor-league affiliates, going to 7-for Ethier's role once he returns remains up in the air following the Dodgers' recent acquisition of Curtis Granderson.
Ethier has been on the DL all season with a herniated disc, but he seems to be reasonably healthy now after having made appearances in 10 games across three minor-league affiliates, going 7-for with six RBI. The year-old has formerly served in the larger portion of a platoon in the corner outfield for the Dodgers, but with the team having recently acquired the lefty-hitting Curtis Granderson to fill that role, Ethier may be limited mostly to pinch-hitting duties in September.
He said he still closes his eyes and sees those games. People bring up his walk-off hits and the clutch moments, but as he thinks back, his freshest memory is last postseason. He trained all winter like he was going to play, talking to his representatives about the opportunities out there.
He said he had some, but nothing he was seriously entertaining. Injured much of the last couple years, he saw his window narrowing. He knew that time came in April. He had been playing golf and tennis often, sometimes with teammates. He still texts with them constantly. Two of them, Matt Kemp and Clayton Kershaw, were among the group of Dodgers in the room as Ethier delivered his retirement press conference.
Those three all started their Major League career with the Dodgers in Kemp remembers those days vividly, coming up from the minor leagues and playing next to Ethier for nearly a decade.
These were two guys who grew up together. To think of Ethier retiring makes Kemp think about his own baseball mortality. It just kind of reminds you of all the things you went through when you were younger and the grind we went through together.
