Could that really be the real deal? He nodded to Lynch, who raised his hand. After a bit of back and forth with other bidders, the auctioneer dropped the hammer. The bike was his. Lynch declines to say how much he spent. Yes and no. Yes, a bike that Fonzie rode in the show sold, but not the bike Fonzie rode. Lynch tucked the bike away in storage and dove into learning everything he could about it. Even the Triumph was a bit much for Winkler to handle, however. He crashed it at least once because the gas tanks shows signs of damage.
The ape-hanger-style bars, bobbed rear fender, peashooter mufflers, and fictitious Wisconsin license plate are precisely as they were in the show, although somewhere along the line the bike lost its mirrors. There is quite often the debate amongst the dinner table about which type of motorbike Fonzie rode.
This confusion is understandable however, as there were a number of different bikes which Fonzie rode throughout the series. Fonzie was a Harley Davidson man in the early days. Although we do not have specific information on the exact bike, it is highly likely that there were a couple of different bikes. Throughout the majority off the series, at least after the first season, Fonzie grew a passion for the British bikes, in particular the Triumph. But just like was the case with the Harley-Davidson motorcycles, we can confirm only one of the Triumph motorcycles which Fonzie rode, however it is also highly likely that there were several other models as well that Fonzie put a leg over at one time or another.
This particular motorcycle which was rode by Fonzie was owned by Bud Elkins, a famous stunt driver. The bike was customized with new bars, a stripped front fender and was given a spray job. Fonzie was never expected to be a main character on the TV show Happy Days, however his appeal to the audience quickly saw him rise to fame. In this particular episode our much loved Fonzie jumps over a shark while waterskiing, still wearing his ever present black leather motorcycle jacket.
Things had been taken a little too far. There may have been several other Fonzie bikes, including rumours of a BSA, but it is difficult to prove as often only a small portion of the bike was in shot. Because of his inability to ride, most scenes with Fonzie on a bike were stationary scenes with him sitting on it, so you rarely see a full shot of the bike in motion.
In one of the late seasons there is another Fonzie bike, but the model is unclear. His friends buy him the bike after he crashes his, but it is only on screen for a few seconds and it is difficult to identify. It looks like a customised Triumph with slightly extended forks. Some say it is a Trophy Bud was a good friend of mine.
I worked for him for many years. Before becoming a stuntman myself. There was only one. But Bud knew where it was. And they paid it.
